Why Your School Wifi Slows Down When Every Classroom Logs On at Once

The moment your wifi actually gets tested

A speed test from the school office, first thing in the morning, will almost always look fine. That’s not the moment that matters.

The real test is 9am, when thirty students in every classroom across the school open a laptop or tablet within the same two minutes, all connecting to the same wireless network at once. Or it’s the assembly hall, three hundred phones and watches nearby even if nobody’s meant to be using them. Or it’s the one classroom at the far end of a corridor where the signal has always been patchy, and everyone’s just learned to live with it.

Wifi that works well in the staff room while every other test happens is a poor test. The DfE’s standard is really about that gap, between a connection that’s technically live and one that actually holds up under how a school uses it.

What the DfE actually asks of your school

A network built for real, concurrent use. Your wireless network should use, at minimum, the current Wi-Fi Alliance standard (Wi-Fi 7 as it stands), and should be able to handle everyone connecting and using it at once, not just a handful of test devices.

Full coverage, not just good coverage in some rooms. A working signal throughout the buildings, and outside where it’s needed, planned properly with wireless heat mapping rather than access points added wherever was convenient at the time.

Central management. One tool that lets IT support configure every access point, monitor performance, and get alerted the moment something fails, rather than finding out from a member of staff.

Security that keeps unauthorised devices off the network. Guest and student devices properly separated from staff and admin systems, using current authentication standards (WPA3), with extra protection such as multi-factor authentication for anyone with admin access to the network itself.

Where we’d suggest starting

Start by asking your IT support two questions: how many devices can genuinely connect at once in your busiest room without things slowing down, and is there anywhere on site where the signal reliably drops? Most schools already know the answer to the second one, it’s usually common knowledge among staff long before it reaches IT support.

Then ask them to confirm three things: that there’s a central tool managing every access point rather than each one being configured separately, that guest and student devices sit on a properly separated network from staff systems, and that any planned upgrade uses the current Wi-Fi standard rather than one that’s already several generations behind.

Our approach

We don’t recommend replacing a wireless network that’s coping fine just because a newer standard exists. Most of the wifi complaints we hear about turn out to be a coverage gap in one or two specific spots, not a network that needs rebuilding. We’d rather find and fix the actual dead zone than sell you a full refresh you don’t need.

Most wifi problems turn out to be a specific dead zone, not a network that needs replacing.
