Digital Leadership and Governance for Schools: The DfE Standard, Simplified

Of the six DfE standards, digital leadership and governance is the one that quietly underpins the rest. Cyber security, filtering and monitoring, broadband, none of them are managed well without someone accountable for the decisions and a clear record of what your school actually has.

This series works through what the standard asks, across four parts, building from the basics through to planning ahead for 2027.

The standard is built in a deliberate order: three foundational pieces before a full strategy. First, a named SLT digital lead with the standing to make decisions, not necessarily the most technical person in the building. Second, three registers kept up to date, contracts, physical assets, and information assets, without which schools routinely lose money to forgotten subscriptions or discover a critical system is unsupported only once it fails. Third, digital technology written into your disaster recovery and business continuity plans, tested annually. Only once those three are in place does the DfE expect a two-year digital strategy, reviewed annually rather than filed and forgotten.

If your school hasn’t formally assigned an SLT digital lead, that’s the genuine starting point, several of the other standards assume that role already exists. After that, even a basic spreadsheet is enough to start a contracts register, most schools find at least one subscription they’d forgotten they were paying for.

This one rarely feels urgent the way a cyber incident does. That’s exactly why it’s worth getting right early.
